How Far in Advance Should You Book International Removals?

How Far in Advance Should You Book International Removals | Great Moving

“How soon should I book?” is one of the first questions people ask once they’ve decided to move abroad, and the honest answer is: earlier than you think, especially if your dates aren’t flexible.

There’s no single rule that fits every move, but the general shape of it is consistent enough to plan around.

For a Standard Household Move: 4–6 Weeks

If you’re moving a full household to Spain, France or Germany and you already know roughly when you want to go, four to six weeks ahead is a comfortable window. It gives enough time to confirm dates, sort out packing if you need it, and — if you’re going shared-load — line up with a vehicle that’s already heading your way.

Booking this far out also means you’re not stuck with whatever date happens to be free. You get to choose.

For Dedicated Vehicle or Larger Moves: 6–8 Weeks

If timing matters — you’re completing on a property on a specific day, or you need a dedicated vehicle rather than shared-load — give yourself a bit more runway. Six to eight weeks lets us plan the route properly and confirm a date that actually works for both ends of the move, not just whichever slot is left.

Summer Is Always Tighter

If you’re moving between May and September, book earlier than you think you need to. This is the busiest period for European relocations — school year changes, better weather for moving, holiday season overlap — and the best dates get taken first. A move that would need four weeks’ notice in February might need six or seven in July.

Last-Minute Moves Aren’t Impossible — Just More Limited

Sometimes there isn’t a choice. A job starts sooner than expected, or a property chain finally completes after sitting still for months. If you’re booking with less than two weeks’ notice, it’s still worth calling — we may be able to fit you in, particularly for smaller loads or if a shared-load route happens to be running your way. It just narrows the options compared to planning ahead.

What Happens If Your Dates Shift After Booking

International moves involving property chains or visa processes don’t always stay on schedule, even with good planning. If your date moves, tell us as early as possible — we can usually adjust collection and delivery, and storage is always an option if there’s a gap between your old place being empty and your new one being ready.

A Simple Way to Think About It

  • Flexible dates, smaller load, happy to go shared-load — 4 weeks is usually fine
  • Fixed dates, full household, want a dedicated vehicle — aim for 6–8 weeks
  • Moving in summer — add a couple of extra weeks either way
  • Moving with very little notice — call us, don’t assume it’s impossible

The Short Version

Book earlier than feels necessary, especially in summer or if you need a specific delivery date. It costs nothing to ask early and gives you far more control over price and timing than waiting until the last few weeks.
